CNA Certification In West Virginia

Acquiring CNA certification in West Virginia requires the aspiring candidates to go for the authorized program program and qualify the competency test. The approval of program course, administration of the competency exam and management of the state registry is carried out by the Office of Health Facility Licensure and Certification. Eligibility Criteria for Completing CNA Certification in WV

  • If you are a new graduate who has completed a CNA Program program approved by the state, but was never registered as a nurse aide in WV, you must fulfill the below requirements:
    • Complete a nurse aide program program approved by West Virginia within the past 2 years.
    • Pass the nursing assistant exam within 2 years of program completion. If you fail the exam in all the 3 attempts, you will be required to take an approved program program again.
  • If you are a CNA who has completed CNA Program for more than 2 years, but has never been licensed in WV, you cannot take the skills and competency test since the exam must be taken within 2 years of program completion.
  • If you are a nurse aide who has completed the program and passed the state approved exam in WV, but allowed your license to lapse for some reason within the past 5 years, you need to fulfill the following eligibility criteria:
    • Completed a state-recognized program program and exam, worked as a CNA and then allowed their registration to lapse within the past 5 years.
    • Your name was never listed in the abuse registry of WV or any other state.
    • You may be eligible to take the refresher course. During the course, you will practice various skills that are required to work as a certified nursing assistant. You will also become qualified to take the Nursing Assistant Exam within 6 months of the completion of the refresher course.

    Note – If your registration has lapsed for more than 5 years, you will be required to complete a nurse aide program program and pass the exam, in order to be listed in the state registry.


Stepwise Process for Getting CNA Certification in WV

Follow the below steps to be a CNA in the state:

Step 1 – The initial step is to find out if you are eligible to take the evaluation test. The eligibility criteria have been explained above.

Step 2 – Complete your application and submit it to the PHD (Professional Healthcare Development, LLC) for pre-registration. You may obtain the application from your nursing assistant program program; or else, you can also download it from the below link:

Step 3 – Attach the required fee made payable to the Professional Healthcare Development, LLC in the form of money order, facility check, certified check, Master Card, VISA, or Discover Card.

Step 4 – Submit the completed application and required fee to:

Step 5 – Upon receiving your application and testing fee, PHD will pre-register you and send you an admission ticket that includes your exam date.

Step 6 – Take and pass both the sections of the test- written/oral and skills evaluation.

Step 7 – Your results will be mailed by the PHD to you and your program instructor. If you pass and meet all the requirements, your name will be listed on the WV Nurse Aide Registry.

Renewal of CNA License in WV

The validity period of your nurse aide license in WV is 2 years. After this you can work as a CNA only if you renew your certificate. You will receive a reminder mail to renew approximately sixty (60) days before the expiry date of your certificate. Requirements to Get Nursing Assistant License Renewed

  • Provide a proof of at least 8 hours of employment as a nurse aide in the past 2 years.

The West Virginia Nursing Assistant Registry will verify your licensure status in the state where you are currently registered, and if you meet all the required necessities, you will be registered in WV without testing.
