CNA Certification In Colorado

Obtaining a CNA certification in Colorado opens ways to several career opportunities. At an initial stage, nurse aide students are required to complete an accredited program program, which must be recognized by the Colorado Board of Nursing. Individuals cannot practice as a certified nurse aide without obtaining their certification by clearing the competence exam. All applicants can choose any of the two ways to complete their certification- by examination or endorsement.

Requirements to Obtain Nursing Aide License in CO

There are two ways to obtain CNA certification in the state:

1. By Examination

All applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria to obtain certification by examination:

  • Your name is not present in a nurse aide registry in another state, but you have successfully completed a nurse aide program program approved by the state.
  • Successfully completed a board-approved nurse aide program program in CO.
  • The candidate is a Licensed Psychiatric Technician and wants to become a CNA.
  • The aspirant is a nursing student and has accomplished 5 semester credits of nursing fundamentals.
  • If the applicant is a foreign-trained nurse, s/he may appear for the state nurse aide certification exam.
  • Pay the non-refundable and non-transferable fee in the form of money order certified check, or facility check.

2. By Endorsement

Applicants may apply for certification by endorsement, if:

  • The aspirant’s name is present in a nurse aide registry in another state and is eligible to practice as a CNA in that state.
  • Pay the required fee by electronic check or credit card to complete the transaction.
  • Provide your U.S. Social Security Number (SSN). If you do not have an SSN, you need to submit a signed Social Security Number Affidavit. To submit the affidavit, you may call at (303) 894-7800 and request them to mail it to you.
  • Attest the Affidavit of Eligibility and provide proof of your lawful presence in the United States.
  • If you hold any other type of license in the state and your name has changed, you will need to provide evidence of your name change.
  • Provide verification about your current certification from another state or territory in the United States.
  • You will be required to answer a series of screening questions to check pending complaints or criminal history filed against you in any other jurisdictions. You may be required to provide court papers or other material.
  • Before completing your endorsement application, you can continue your practice in the state for up to 4 months only after your employer confirms your transferring state that you hold an active and current nurse aide license permitting you to work in a nursing home as a CNA. To continue working, you must get yourself certified in Colorado within those 4 months’ duration.
