CNA Certification In Nevada

1. By Examination

If you have never held a license as a certified nursing assistant in the state of Nevada, or in any other U.S. state, then you must fulfill the following requisites:

• Submit the application with all the essential details.
• Pay the required application and fingerprinting fees via cashier’s or personal check, money order, or American Express™ credit or debit card or Visa™, MasterCard™, Discover™, made payable to “Nevada State Board of Nursing”.
• Provide a copy of certificate verifying the completion of a program program that is approved by the state and meets all the requirements of OBRA. Or else, you can also submit a transcript illustrating the successful completion of “nursing fundamentals.” The program program you completed is valid only for 2 years.
• Submit fingerprint cards.
• Pass the clinical and knowledge examinations.

2. By Endorsement

If you currently hold a CNA certificate in another state of the United States and want to transfer your certificate to Nevada, then you must apply by endorsement. The requirements listed above (i to iv) are same for the endorsement too. Additional requisites that make you eligible for Nevada license includes:

• Provide working experience of 8 hours as a CNA in a registered medical facility within the previous 2 years. You may submit any of the following acceptable proofs:
  • W-2 form
    OR
  • Paycheck stub which must have your company name included.
    OR
  • Letter from employer with the title/signature provided on the company letterhead.
• Submit endorsement application(s) provided by the state where you were initially certified as a CNA.
• Submit copy of your active certificate in another state, which must include the expiration date of your license.

The CNA license of a licensee in Nevada expires on his/her every second birthday. For the first renewal, you may have to renew your license in a period of less than 2 years, depending on the date of your birthday, in relation to the date your certification was issued. If you want to renew your lapsed / expired Nevada CNA certificate, you must meet the following requirements:

• Practiced at least 40 hours as a paid nurse aide in any state of the United States within the last 2 years. The services provided as a volunteer will not be counted.
• Completed at least 24 hours of CEUs (continuing education units) within the renewal period.

Question 1 – I don’t have an access to web/internet, so I am unable to renew my license/certificate online. Is there any other way to renew my license in NV?

Answer – You can use public libraries that allow access to the World Wide Web. Or else, you can call the nursing office at (888) 590-6726 and they will send you a paper application. After filling the form, you can return it back by fax or mail. These paper applications are generally processed within 1 business day of receipt.

Question 2 – I renewed my certificate, but I haven’t received the card. When will I receive it?

Answer – License cards are not issued by the state of Nevada. You can either verify your licensure status by calling the Board office at (888) 590-6726 or by using the web verification system of the state. You can also take a print out of your certificate while verifying it. As long as the verification system provided on the state website indicates the validity of your certificate, you can continue your practice.

Question 3 – Suggest me some approved provider for my Continuing Education?

Answer – Try Google or other web search engines using keywords such as “CNA continuing education”, or check with your human resources or staff development office. If the CE provider is an academic institution and has a Nevada CE provider number, and is approved by health-related board or another state nursing board, then it is recognized by the Nevada State Board of Nursing or is accepted by one of the organizations stated below:

• American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
• American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
• National Association of Pediatric Nurse Associates and Practitioners.
• American Nurse Credentialing Center Commission on Accreditation.
• National League of Nursing.
