CNA Certification In South Carolina

Getting trained from a nurse aide program approved by the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is the first step towards attaining CNA certification in South Carolina. After the applicant completes the program, the next and the final step is to pass the competency exam. Once the examination is cleared, name of the candidate is listed in the SC Nurse Aide Registry. The SC Department works with the Pearson VUE group to conduct the exam that has the same standards as that of the Nurse Aide Assessment Program.

Eligibility Routes for Candidates Applying for CNA Licensure by Examination

If you are applying for the NNAAP Examination in South Carolina, you are required to complete the “Application for Registration by Competency Examination” form. A completed application, required fees, and a copy of completion of program program or an original letter obtained from the CNA Program program confirming the program completion need to be submitted to the NACES (National Association of Credential Evaluation Services).

If you are sending an original letter as a program proof, make sure that it is written on the letterhead of the CNA program and must comprise the below details:

  • Name of the nurse aide candidate
  • Date of completion of the program program
  • Code number of the program program
  • Signature of the instructor, director, or administrator of the program

The eligibility routes are as follows:

  • South Carolina State-Approved Nurse Aide Trained Candidates
    You fall in this route if you have completed a nurse aide program program approved by the South Carolina State within the past 2 years.
  • Out-of-State Trained Candidates
    You are eligible for this route if you have completed 100 hours of nurse aide program from another state within the past 2 years. You are required to submit a letter of completion of the program program on the letterhead, which must state the number of clinical and classroom hours.
  • Lapsed or Expired South Carolina Registry Applicants
    You are qualified for this route if you have completed CNA program of 100 hours approved by SC and your certificate has not expired for more than 2 years. Your certificate / license must be in good standing.
  • Out-of-State Registry Applicants
    You fall in this route if you have completed 100 hours (including the clinical hours) of nursing assistant education, and your certificate has not expired for more than 2 years. Your certificate / license must be in good standing. You are required to submit a letter of successful completion of certificate/ diploma of the program program on the letterhead, which must include the number of clinical and classroom hours.
  • Student Nurse, LPN or RN Graduate or Military Candidate
    If you are an RN or LPN graduate, student nurse, or military candidate, you need to contact the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services at scnar@scdhhs.gov in order to find out your eligibility prior submitting an application.

Requirements to be Fulfilled by Aspirants Applying for CNA Licensure by Reciprocity

You can transfer your nurse aide license via reciprocity if you meet any of the following requirements:

  • You are a nurse aide, and your name is listed on the nurse aide registry of another state.
  • Your license status is active and in good standing.
  • Completed at least 100 hours of basic nurse aide course approved by the state.

Note – No fee is charged for certification by reciprocity in SC.

Procedure to Obtain CNA License in SC by Examination

Step 5 – You will be sent an Authorization to Test Notice (yellow confirmation card), making you eligible to take the test within 10 business days of application submission. In case, you do not receive the notice within the specified time period, call NACES at (800) 273-3517.

Step 6 – Take and qualify both the sections- written and skills evaluation – of the test with the passing scores.

How to Renew CNA Licensure in South Carolina?

All certified nursing assistants are required to renew their license in every 2 years from the issue date, in order to stay active on the South Carolina Nurse Aide Registry.

Requirements

To renew a nursing assistant license, the candidate must have provided paid nursing related services as a CNA for a minimum of 8 hours during the period of 2 years before the expiry date of your license.

Lapsed Certification

If your CNA license has lapsed and you want to re-activate it, you need to retrain or / and retest depending on whether you have or haven’t completed a nursing assistant program program of 100 hours approved by the state.

Have a look at the below situations and find out if you need to retrain and/or retest:

  • If your CNA license has lapsed on the state’s registry, and you have not completed the required 100 hours of program course, you are required to train at a state-recognized program program of 100 hours and retest. You need to pass both the sections, i.e., the skills evaluation and the written (or English or Spanish Oral Exam) examination before updating your license back to an active status.
  • If your nursing assistant certificate has lapsed on the state’s registry, and it has not expired for more than 2 years and you have completed the state-approved program course of 100 hours, you only need to retest and pass both the sections of the examination.
  • If your CNA license has lapsed for more than 2 years, you are required to retrain at a program program (including 100 hours of instructions) and retest. Pass both the portions of the exam with the required minimum scores.

FAQs

Question 1 – Is there any renewal fee in South Carolina?

Answer – Yes. A renewal fee of $28 is charged in every 2 years of renewal period. You are required to purchase a money order for $28 made payable to the Pearson VUE, and mail it to the Pearson VUE address.

Question 2 – I am employed in a Medicaid – certified nursing home. Do I have to pay any renewal fee?

Answer – No. If any certified nursing assistant is working in a Medicaid – certified nursing home, the fees will be paid by the nursing home. You must contact your employer and get a facility check of $28 renewal fee.

Question 3 – I have applied for certification by reciprocity. How much time does it take to complete the process?

Answer – The process completely depends on the time your original state of licensure takes to provide all the required documents to the Pearson VUE. Generally, the entire process takes at least 30 days from the date when your reciprocity request is received by the Pearson VUE.
