CNA Certification In Louisiana

To obtain certification in LA, you must fulfill the following requirements:

• Complete the required program program and/ or coursework, which must include at least 100 hours of clinical hands-on practice and 75 hours of in-class instructions.
• Submit the following documents:
• Current background check
• Two photos (passport size)
• Two fingerprint cards
• A negative tuberculosis test which is completed within the last six months
• Photo ID
• Proof of immunizations
• High school diploma or GED
• Pass the certified nursing assistant exam.

Candidates applying for CNA certification in LA must follow the below procedure:

• After completion of your CNA Program, you can apply to take the competency exam. For this, you will be required to register yourself at any test location approved by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. Make sure you pre-register to take the test.
• Pass the exam with a score of at least 70 percent in both the skills test and written section.
• After passing the exam with the required minimum scores, your name will be listed on the state’s registry.

Step 1 – Download the “Louisiana Reciprocity Form” using the following link:

Step 2 – Complete the top portion of the form. Now, enclose a copy of your social security card and send the form to the nurse aide registry where you are currently registered.

All certified nursing assistant license in the state of Louisiana are valid for 2 years from the last date of certificate completion or renewal. A renewal form will be sent to you approximately 90 days before the expiration date of your license. You will be required to show up the documents of having worked at least 8 hours as a CNA in the past 2 years. If you are unable to show the required work experience, you must take the written portion of the CNA Entrance Exam again.

Question 1 – I am planning to shift to another state. What is the procedure to transfer my license?

Answer – To transfer your certification to another state, you are required to contact the Nurse Aide Registry of the state you are transferring to, in order to know their policy and procedure(s).

Question 2 – Is there any time limit to pass both the sections of the CNA exam?

Answer – Yes. All aspiring candidates are required to qualify both the skills evaluation and the written (or oral) examination within a period of 2 years to be listed on the LA Nurse Aide Registry.

Question 3 – Am I eligible to carry out the duties of a CNA before I complete my certification?

Answer – If you are currently enrolled in a program course in a nursing home approved by the state, you have 120 days to complete the course and get certified. During this period, you cannot perform any duty of a CNA for which you have not been trained and confirmed by the instructor. If you are not registered in a program program, you cannot carry out any nurse aide duties until and unless you complete your certification.
