CNA Certification In Delaware

The Division of Long Term Care Resident Protection regulates the CNA certification in Delaware. Aspirants are required to complete a certified nurse assistant program program and clear the NNAAP exam, in order to get registered on Delaware CNA registry. Or else, if the applicant already holds an active license in another state or territory of the USA, s/he can apply to transfer their nursing license to DE.

Eligibility Criteria to Obtain CNA Certification in DE

1. New Nurse Aide (Delaware Trained)

  • Completed a nurse aide program program approved by the Division of Long Term Care Residents Protection (DLTCRP) within the past 24 months.
  • Pay the required examination processing fee via American Express, MasterCard or Visa, company check, cashier’s check, or money order made payable to the Prometric.

2. Lapsed Nurse Aide

If you had been a nurse aide in the state of Delaware, but could not complete a minimum of 64 hours of nursing-related services within 2 years of certification period, then:

  • Retake and pass the competency exam in order to get recertified.
  • Provide evidence of your last certification.

3. Out-of-State Certification

If you are a certified nursing aide in another state or a GNA in Maryland, and do not have 3 months of full-time employment, then:

  • Take the Delaware Nurse Aide Competency Exam directly without taking the nurse aide program program approved by DLTCRP.
  • Provide a current GNA or CNA license from the state where you hold your current license.

4. By Reciprocity

  • Attach a non-refundable personal check of $30 made payable to the “State of Delaware”.
  • Submit a copy of a photo ID that demonstrates the correct spelling of your name and your birth date.
  • Submit a copy of your current state certification card. Or else, you can also attach verification printout from your state’s website.
  • You must be currently active and listed on the nurse aide registry of another state. Or else, if you are from Maryland, you must be a GNA.
  • The candidate is expected to be free from all kinds of substantiated findings of neglect, patient abuse, or misappropriation of patient or resident property recorded on the nurse aide registry of another state.
  • Worked as a CNA (full-time employment) for a minimum of 3 months, or 420 hours under the guidance of an RN (Registered Nurse), or successfully completed a nurse aide program of a minimum of 150 hours.

Recertification/Renewal of CNA Certification in DE

All certified nursing assistants need to serve for at least 64 hours within every recertification period of 2 years. In addition, you must also complete 24 hours of continuing education requirements pre-approved by the Division of Long Term Care Residents Protection, which includes:

  • At least 2 hours of program in patient abuse prevention.
  • At least 6 hours of dementia program.
  • The balance of essential hours can be in other general health care topics that can be related to:
    • Meeting special requirements of the patients or residents.
    • Ensuring the continued competence of nursing assistants.
    • Offering program in areas of weakness recognized by the performance reviews of the CNA.

Question 1 I have completed my graduation from an LPN program last year. How can I become a CNA in the state?

Answer – All aspirants who have completed their graduation within 24 months are eligible for certification. You are required to provide a copy of your diploma that must have an official school seal along with the application.

Question 2 – What are the requirements of a nursing student to become a nurse aide in DE?

Answer – If you are enrolled in an accredited nursing program and have completed a “Fundamentals/Basic Nursing” course of at least 75 hours of clinical instruction, you must provide an official letter from your concerned school verifying the completion of that course.

Question 3 – How much do I have to pay to renew my CNA license?

Answer – In Delaware, no fee is charged for renewal. However, $25.00 is charged to renew a lapsed CNA license, if you get it renewed within 30 days of lapsing.
